The Blue Whale, by Donna K. Grosvenor, is an informational book for children. It focuses on blue whales, but also has facts about orcas, right whales, and sperm whales. I really enjoyed this book! It is written in a way that would be easy for children to understand and enjoy. The illustrations are paintings done by Larry Foster. They use many shades of blues and greens to look like the ocean and the whales have dimension, which I liked. This book can teach children a lot about whales, like that The Blue Whale, by Donna K. This book can teach children a lot about whales, like that blue whales "weigh more than 30 elephants" or that baby blue whales gain 200 pounds a day. The book also teaches kids about whalers and extinction, which I think is important. I am very intrigued by whales and don't believe in keeping them in captivity or hunting them, so I really liked reading this book. This is definitely a book that I would have in my classroom. ...more

This was an article that offered nothing but facts. However, the author used voice in this article. I compare this article to the book, Man on the Moon because Man on the Moon was based on a true story and it was so boring. I picked up on the voice in the article by all of the adjectives that were used like magnificent and mind-boggling. The strategy or technique that I want to take away from this article is that the simplest adjustment to writing, such as adding an adjective here or there, can make such a big difference on the effect that it has on the reader. ...more

Recommends it for: parents reading with their children
Simply illustrated, but colorful book that tells about various kinds of whales, focusing on the blue whale. It also carries an environmental message encouraging people to "Save the Whales." Our girls really enjoyed discussing facts about whales, especially the fact that as mammals, they breastfeed their young.Simply illustrated, but colorful book that tells about various kinds of whales, focusing on the blue whale. This was a good book for kids to learn about whales. It's a National Geographic book so it paints modern whaling in a very negative view but a good book with lots of information.
